La Rioja Alta Torre de Ona Reserva 2008
La Rioja Alta Torre de Ona Reserva 2008
We received a very small allocation of this wine that is no longer made by parent winery La Rioja Alta S.A. Tempranillo with a small percentage of Mazuelo (5%) from the Altos de Valecilla, Calvo, Martelo and Berzal vineyards surrounding the winery. Clay-limestone soils produce small grape clusters with loose grains, which result in concentrated musts that are very aromatic and complex, typical of this terroir. Only available at Del Duero Wines in the US!

Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes
"Closed dark cherry red color with garnet edge and medium-high layer. Very intense on the nose, dominated by mature wild forest fruit notes: blackberries and wild strawberries, which blend into a background of sweet licorice and cocoa notes. On the palate, it is balanced, with good structure, with fine tannins that leave a fruity aftertaste over creamy oak notes. A wine that pairs well with any type of stews"

La Rioja Alta
Founded by 5 Riojan families in 1890 in the famous Haro Station district as "Sociedad Vinicola de la Rioja Alta", and with their first president being Saturnina Garcia Cid y Garate (Remarkable that Saturnina was a woman, quite rare at the time. This shows the innovative and modern spirit of this historic winery since its inception). Their first winemaker was a Monsieur Vigier, a French man who create Rioja Alta's Gran Reserva 890 as his first wine.
It wasn't until 1904 that Alfredo Ardanza, founder of the Ardanza winery, proposed to merge both companies, which eventually became "La Rioja Alta S.A." in 1941.
